What is HIV?
HIV (Human Immuno Deficiency Virus) is a virus that damages the immune system. Our immune system helps the body to fight against infections. The infection can remain dormant and remain inactive for many years without producing any symptoms. However, HIV makes the body vulnerable to infections and if left unchecked, the virus can advance to AIDS. Be alert!! if any of these symptoms are seen.
Symptoms of HIV (AIDS) can include:
- Weight loss
- Repeated fever
- Extreme tiredness
- Swelling of the lymph glands in the armpits, groin, or neck
- Diarrhoea which lasts for more than a week
- Sores in the mouth, anus, or genitals
- Pneumonia
- Red, brown, pink, or purplish blotches on or under the skin or inside the mouth, nose, or eyelids
- Memory loss, depression, anxiety, etc
Each of these symptoms can also appear as a part of other illnesses.
How is HIV (AIDS) transmitted?
HIV is transmitted through bodily fluids of an infected person like Blood, Semen or pre-seminal fluid, Vaginal fluids and Rectal fluids, and Breast milk. If these fluids of an infected person come in contact with the mucous membrane, the transmission of HIV happens. Mucous membranes are seen inside the rectum, vagina, penis, and mouth. Another way of transmission is through damaged tissue. It also gets transmitted if directly injected into the bloodstream from a contaminated needle or syringe. A person infected with HIV can pass the virus even if they have symptoms or not.
How does one get infected with HIV?
Through sexual contact with an HIV-infected person, from the HIV-infected mother to the fetus. By sharing needles and syringes contaminated with HIV components. Through the reception of blood and organs contaminated with HIV.
AIDS does not spread :
- By touch, shaking hands, coughing, sneezing etc
- Through insects like mosquitoes, houseflies, etc
- Staying together and sharing food
- By sharing the same toilet
- By taking a bath in the same pond or pool
