Low Sperm Count or Oligospermia

Sex is a stimulating force that invigorates the charm of life. This force opens the door to future generations via procreation. Therefore fertility is directly proportional to males and females having perfect sexual health. Low sperm count inhibits this flow of smooth and happy sexual life and gives way to infertility. Low Sperm Count Treatment is the solution.

To ensure a smooth sexual life, sperm count has a pertinent role. The normal count of sperm in the semen, a male ejaculates out, is 15 million sperm per milliliter of semen. If it falls below this desired minimum, he is said to have a low sperm count or Oligospermia.

Symptoms of Low Sperm Count

The inability to conceive a child can be said to be the primary symptom or many people consider that, as the chief symptom of low sperm count. As we know, only one sperm can fertilize his partner’s egg, and a male with Oligospermia has only a low chance of rewarding his mate with the winning sperm. Even though this is the general condition, much low sperm counted males can become fathers. Apart from not instigating pregnancy, other key symptoms are also worth mentioning.

They are:

  • Low sex drive or low libido
  • Erectile Dysfunction
  • Decrease in body and facial hair
  • Dilated testicular veins
  • Pain, swelling, or a lump in the testicle area.
  • Hormone abnormality

Causes of Low Sperm Count

Various types of causes can be cited for the low sperm count. The production, transportation, and usage of sperm is a very intricate and tangled procedure, which is conducted under the effective functioning of testicles or testes, hypothalamus, and pituitary glands. The testicle produces the sperms, which are transported through delicate tubes, finally mixing up with semen, that we all know will ejaculate out. Any disturbance of this functional system from any other system may cause low sperm count. Abnormal shape and movement of the sperm is also a firm reason for Oligospermia.

Medical Causes of Low Sperm Count

Infection

Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD/STI) like Gonorrhoea or HIV can cause infections, like inflammation of the epididymis or testicle can damage the sperm production and obstruct its passage.

Varicocele

Even though the exact relationship between varicocele and sperm production is unknown, this swelling of the veins causes a decrease in the quality of sperm. This might be assigned to abnormal testicular temperature regulation.

Retrograde Ejaculation

When the male attains orgasm, ejaculation occurs. At that time, if the semen enters the bladder instead of emerging out, he has struck with Retrograde Ejaculation, which is an alarming condition that can disturb semen production.

Certain medications

Proper ejaculation can be disrupted by some blood pressure medications like alpha-blockers, which pave the way for low sperm count. Apart from this, some cancer medications, anti-fungal and antibiotic medications, ulcer medications, long-term anabolic steroid use, and testosterone replacement therapy, can destroy healthy sperm production. Apart from this, certain surgeries like vasectomy,  hernia repairs, scrotal or testicular surgeries, prostate surgeries, and large abnormal surgeries create helpless males who have no sufficient sperm to ejaculate.

Tumors

The main reproductive organs can be affected by tumors and cancers, along with surgeries and chemotherapy, to treat them.

Anti bodies

Anti-sperm antibodies are immune system cells, that destroy the sperm mistakenly identifying them as harmful invaders.

Hormone imbalance

The pituitary, testicles, and hypothalamus produce necessary hormones, but the thyroid and adrenal glands produce harmful hormones, along with good ones, which tarnish sperm production.

Defects in transporting

Surgery, prior infections, trauma, or abnormal development with cystic fibrosis, all, can inversely affect the transportation system of sperms.

Chromosome defects

Sometimes a male is born with two X chromosomes and one Y chromosome instead of one X and one Y, which is an inherited disorder, named Klinefelter’s Syndrome. This can affect the male reproductive organ to abnormal development. Cystic fibrosis, Kallmann’s syndrome, and Kartagener’s syndrome are also genetic disorders that blemish fertility and reduce sperm production.
