What is HIV?

HIV (Human Immuno Deficiency Virus) is a virus that damages the immune system.  Our immune system helps the body to fight against infections. The infection can remain dormant and remain inactive for many years without producing any symptoms. However, HIV makes the body vulnerable to infections and if left unchecked, the virus can advance to  AIDS. Be alert!! if any of these symptoms are seen. (AIDS HIV)

Symptoms of HIV (AIDS) can include:

  • Weight loss
  • Repeated fever
  • Extreme  tiredness
  • Swelling of the lymph glands in the armpits, groin, or neck
  • Diarrhoea which lasts for more than a week

  • Pneumonia
  • Red, brown, pink, or purplish blotches on or under the skin or inside the mouth, nose, or eyelids
  • Memory loss, depression, anxiety etc

Each of these symptoms can also appear as a part of other illnesses also.

How is HIV (AIDS) transmitted?

HIV is transmitted through bodily fluids of an infected person like Blood, Semen or pre-seminal fluid, Vaginal fluids and Rectal fluids, Breast milk. If these fluids of an infected person come in contact with the mucous membrane, the transmission of HIV happens. Mucous membranes are seen inside the rectum, vagina, penis, and mouth. Another way of transmission is through damaged tissue. It also gets transmitted if directly injected into the bloodstream from a contaminated needle or syringe. A person infected with HIV can pass the virus even if they have symptoms or not.

How one gets infected with HIV?

Through sexual contact with an HIV infected person, from HIV infected mother to the foetus. By sharing needle and syringe contaminated with HIV components. Through the reception of blood and organs contaminated with HIV.

AIDS does not spread :

  • By touch, shaking hands, coughing, sneezing etc
  • Through insects like mosquitoes, houseflies etc
  • Staying together and sharing food
  • By sharing the same toilet
  • By taking a bath in the same pond or pool

How to prevent AIDS?

AIDS mainly spread through unprotected sexual practice. Always follow safer sex practices. Use a condom every time you try sex, especially with unknown partners.

AIDS is wide-spreading around the globe. Enjoy sex, but keep yourself safe from contracting with this dreadful and life-threatening disease.
